Welcome to Makes Kids Happier episodes, where we explore the wonders and challenges of parenting. In today’s episode, as the leaves turn golden and the air crisps, we delve into the heart of Thanksgiving and its powerful role in fostering gratitude within our families.”

Gratitude, a simple yet profound concept, is more than just a ‘thank you.’ It’s about recognizing and appreciating the positives in our lives, both big and small. Let’s pause for a moment. Think about something small that brought you joy today. Got it? That’s where gratitude starts.

Our role as parents in modeling gratitude is vital. When we openly express gratitude for everyday moments – whether it’s enjoying morning coffee, receiving a helping hand from a neighbor, or seeing our child’s smile – we teach our children to find joy in the simple things. Remember, gratitude begins with us. In this way, Thanksgiving becomes more than just a holiday; it transforms into a focal point for gratitude.

To achieve this, create a positive and engaging environment during the holiday preparations. Involve your children in these activities, whether it’s setting the table or helping with the cooking. Use this time not just to prepare for the holiday, but also to share and discuss what you’re thankful for. Consider assigning a small, manageable task for your child to assist with this Thanksgiving. This involvement in the holiday preparations can be exciting for them, and they might be thrilled to cooperate with you. By doing so, you’re not only making them a part of the celebration but also teaching them the value of gratitude and family collaboration.

Now, let’s talk about specific Thanksgiving activities. Encourage your child to express their feelings through art and writing. Start by asking them the common question: ‘What are you thankful for?’ For younger kids, provide paper and crayons for drawing. They can illustrate anything they’re grateful for, like a family pet, a favorite toy, or even the Thanksgiving meal itself. For older children and adults, offer stationery to write down their gratitudes and aspirations for the year ahead. These lists can become living documents, displayed in their rooms and updated each month. Imagine the joy in seeing this expression of gratitude grow over time!

I also encourage you to inspire your children to keep a gratitude journal, or to set aside a few minutes at dinner for everyone to share something they’re grateful for. How about planning a family volunteering day? It’s a wonderful way to demonstrate to kids the impact of gratitude and empathy.

I would like to share with you a common parents reaction that occur In my clinic. I often meet families grappling with their child’s ADHD for example or other challenges. It’s common for parents to be initially overwhelmed by the difficulties, finding it hard to see past the daily struggles. This focus on the challenges is a natural response, but there’s another side to the story waiting to be discovered

We begin by addressing two critical questions: ‘What are the good things my child brings to this family?’ and ‘What have I learned from dealing with challenging situations?’ These aren’t easy questions, especially when you’ve been caught up in a cycle of frustration and concern. But they are essential in shifting our perspective.”

Many parents are surprised at how this simple exercise opens their eyes. It’s a practice, a conscious effort to find the beauty and positivity that their child brings into their lives. It’s about recognizing the creativity, the energy, the unique insights, and even the lessons in resilience and patience that these situations teach us.”

It’s important not to give up on this practice. Continually asking these questions, and genuinely looking for the answers, can lead to a profound change in how we view our children and our situation. It’s about consistently choosing to see the beauty in our children, even when it’s not immediately apparent.”

This shift in perspective doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a journey, one that requires patience and persistence. But the rewards are immeasurable. By acknowledging and focusing on these positive aspects, we not only enhance our relationship with our children but also help them to see and appreciate their own value.”

This Thanksgiving, let’s embrace the transformative power of gratitude in our families. It’s not just about being thankful for the perfect moments but also about finding value in the challenges. Ask yourself, ‘What am I grateful for today?’ and share it with your child. By doing so, we not only enrich our lives but also lay the groundwork for a more understanding and compassionate family life.”

I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. May this season fill your lives with joy, warmth, and a deeper sense of gratitude. Here’s to a journey of thankfulness that enriches our lives far beyond the holiday season. Thank you for joining us today. Until we meet again, continue embracing the journey of parenting with love and gratitude, and remember, your efforts are key to making your kids happier.
