Understanding and Supporting Children with Sensory Processing Disorder

Are you a parent struggling to understand why your child behaves in ways you can’t quite grasp? Maybe they get upset with the tag on their shirt, dislike the feeling of sand on their feet at the beach, or seem overwhelmed in crowded spaces. These could be signs of Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Understanding SPD can be a significant first step in helping your child navigate through life comfortably.

What is Sensory Processing Disorder?

Sensory Processing Disorder is when the brain has difficulty receiving and responding to information that comes through the senses. Kids with SPD may seem excessively sensitive to stimuli that most people wouldn’t notice or, conversely, not respond to stimuli that typically would be noticeable.

Consider this example: Let’s say you take your child to a birthday party. The room is brightly decorated with balloons, the sound of children laughing fills the air, the smell of pizza is wafting from a corner, and different games are going on. Most children might find this environment exciting or a little overwhelming but manageable. However, a child with SPD may become excessively distressed. The balloons might seem too colorful, the laughter too loud, the smell of the pizza too strong, and the games too chaotic.

This discrepancy is not because children with SPD are trying to be difficult. Their brains simply process sensory inputs differently, making everyday situations challenging and confusing. Understanding their unique sensory experiences is vital in offering them the support they need.

"... She is there all the time, and she helps me a lot to understand my children, it may be absurd, but I was not taught that being a mother is the hardest job I will ever have to do in my life. It is indeed a process Long but how fun it is to have her, you can always cry to her, laugh with her and tell her everything. I highly recommend Efrat, she can be a wave of delegation for you as well!... " Review @ Google!

“ We want to say thank you! We wanted to learn how to deal with him without getting out of control and without being the shouting and threatening parent. Today, we know the right way to deal with the challenges that different situations present to us and set boundaries in a supportive rather than punitive manner.”
